19th OLYMPIC GAMES IN MEXICO CITY, MEXICO 1968 (October 12 27)

The Mexico City Olympics were clouded in controversy and political turmoil almost from the moment in 1963 when this Central American venue, the first to be selected in that region of the world, was named as the IOC's choice for the 1968 Olympic Games.

To start with there were immediate fears that its high altitude of 2 240 metres above sea level would seriously diminish the performances of the endurance athletes and, in the view of some doctors, even endanger their lives. There were also fears that the Mexicans, renowned for their 'manyana' attitude, would not have all their facilities ready in time. Fortunately the worst of these fears proved groundless.
